This happens usually because the config for the monitor is not set
correctly.

try redhat-configure-xfree86 - and choose more appropirate monitor
setting.  (for example 'hardware -> Monitor Type -> Generic CRT
Display -> Monitor 1280x1024). Now you can change the resolution as
well.
