By the way, Mandrake 9.2 *does* automount usb > devices, so it must be possible somehow. I think the Mandrake folk apply the supermount patch into their kernels. The supermount project is somewhere on sf.net. However, some clever use of devlabel might help if you don't want to muck with the kernel.
