Install rhgb pacakge and make sure grub.conf includes a rhgb parameter
like this:

title Fedora Core (2.4.22-1.2129.nptl)
        root (hd0,0)
        kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2129.nptl ro root=/dev/hda2 rhgb
        initrd /initrd-2.4.22-1.2129.nptl.img

rhgb will be shown if you start the system in runlevel 5
