the problem is that I cannot mount the drive any ideas

Verify that there are no partitions so you have the right disk, then create at least one partition on the drive and set the partition type according to how you intend to use it. After writing that and exiting fdisk don't forget to create a filesystem on that partition, which would be /dev/sda1. If there is already a partition, then try mounting /dev/sda1 somewhere. It probably exists.
