What do you get when doing an:
$ rpm -qa gaim

IIUC, up2date doesn't have a list to re-check.  It uses the rpm database.

Sounds like a network issue when downloading.  Does it come up and
complain about the GPG error?

WORKSFORME for both upgrades and clean installs.
