Add some RAM if you can.  The PII/366 is plenty enough processor to run a
Gnome desktop - my primary machine used to be a TP 770X (300 MHz PII). 
Another thing that'll make your 570 a bit more enjoyable is a faster disk.
 40GB 5200 RPM drives are cheap these days, and will just about half the
loading time of most applications compared to the old/slow drive that came
with your laptop originally.

(TP 570E here - 450 MHz PIII, 320M RAM, 40 GB 5200 RPM drive, running FC1
and Gnome with all the trimmings. ;) )
