Dennis Kaptain ??:
You can access the scanner by root.can anyone help me get my Microtek ScanMaker 3600 working with xsane?
I did a google and found http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=37679
I followed the directions by adding sm3600 0x0003 0x05da 0x40ca 0x0000 0x0000 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00000000
to /etc/hotplug/usb.usermap
I also added the suggested script /etc/hotplug/usb/sm3600
while the scanner is on I see in /proc/bus/usb/devices T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 14 Spd=12 MxCh= 0 D: Ver= 1.00 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1 P: Vendor=05da ProdID=40ca Rev= 0.00 C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=60 MxPwr=100mA I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=(none) E: Ad=82(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
when the scanner starts I see the following added to /var/log/messages
Dec 4 21:30:42 GodsMan kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:07.2-1, assigned address 14
Dec 4 21:30:42 GodsMan kernel: usb.c: USB device 14 (vend/prod 0x5da/0x40ca) is not claimed by any active driver.
Dec 4 21:30:45 GodsMan sm3600[10661]: setting permissions of /proc/bus/usb/001/014
Dec 4 21:30:46 GodsMan sm3600[10695]: setting permissions of /proc/bus/usb/001/014
Dec 4 21:30:48 GodsMan devlabel: devlabel service started/restarted
when I execute xsane I get an error box that says: Failed to open device 'sm3600:1/1': Error during device I/O
I also see appended to /var/log/messages: Dec 4 21:30:54 GodsMan modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-81
Any ideas?? Thanks so much.

Or, chmod 666 to the /proc/bus/usb/*, so that you can access it by normal users.
Cheers, :) Samuel
