there are a multitude of ways to 'import' or 'move' files for thunderbird.

you can follow eric's suggestion, if you want to load software that you will
only use a few times.

or, if you have backed up your mail folders, you can create a sub folder
to 'Local Folders' and then close thunderbird, copy your backed up folders
to your sub folder and then move email to where you want.

i have found easiest way, with thunderbird closed, is to rename new 'Mail'
directory to 'mail.old' and then copy old 'Mail' directory to new profile.

this will save you from having to rebuild your mail paths and you will
maintain all your previous structure and filters.

next, move 'mail.old' into 'Local Folders', reopen thunderbird and move email
from 'mail.old' to your folders, then delete 'mail.old'.

there are several thunderbird add-ons that you can do this with, but why load
thunderbird down when you do not have to.
