Actually Maxtor drives work great - you just need to know the
algorithm:

1. Buy drive at local office/computer supply store
2. Have it fail 2 weeks later
3. RMA it to Maxtor
4. Get replacement that works forever.

This has been my consistent experience with Maxtor.
You just need to be prepared to take several
weeks to actually get a working disk :-).
