The new database model in OpenOffice2 looks to me to be the nearest
thing to an Access replacement. What's more, it can read existing
tables in many formats, and use them relationally. I've only looked
briefly, but it looked promising to me.

The problem is that it tend to get slow, for large datasets. It is
therefore usually
better to just use it as a frontend to other databases.
