Not all drives support it, but:

smartctl -i /dev/sda
smartctl version 5.21 Copyright (C) 2002-3 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Device: SEAGATE ST336607LC Version: 0005
Serial number: 3JA1M96X00007344JQJN
Device type: disk
Local Time is: Wed Sep 14 18:27:37 2005 CDT
Device supports SMART and is Enabled
Temperature Warning Enabled

smartctl -a tells a lot more.
