I can't remember the machine model exactly...just one of those things that turned me off to their laptops since you have to get support like you say for X but also for various chipsets, etc.  What a PITA...

Given the reliance HP have on Linux now, it wouldn't surprise me if
things hadn't of changed out of all recognition.

Which laptop was it that caused the problems? The only one I've had
problems with (recently) was an Asus4400 which uses the Intel 915
chipset and a ATI portable 9X (I think!) video chipset. I couldn't get X
to start.
