It means a Linux shell running in a text console or a terminal 
window.

WinXP has a command prompt (not "MS-DOS window"). Click "Start", 
then click "Run", type "cmd.exe" and click "OK". The sha1sum 
command isn't available in Windows by default, you must download 
and install the program.
