Why did you choose the UMS option instead of the manager option? I thought this was slightly more work: mounting the drive, using a simple data base to get a neat arrangement of files on drive, etc.
Ifp-line works quite well if you don't mind using the command line. (It seems to work with mc as an interface but I have not tried this yet as I never install mc and don't like it).

I needed something that allowed me to use the 799 on any computer without installing any extra software. I wanted to be able to use the 799 as an emergency usb stick if needed. I don't know how it is around your work but around here, people would not take nicely to me asking to install some software just to read my stick.
I also needed something that allowed my wife to select the files from our file server to install on her 799. She can use CLI but prefers drag and drop using nautilus. She is so happy with the present system which makes my life easier. :)
I for one, don't mind command line and actually use it instead of most GUI programs.
I forget which ifp program I used at first but mounting and then using cp to choose is much nicer. Now to write a script to sync between playlists (*.m3u) files and the iRiver. It took along time to upload just a few files to the player.
