Can I suggest moving over to yum. Move over the RPMs you already
downloaded with apt into /var/cache/yum/YOURBASEREPO/packages to save
redownloading, then modify either /etc/yum.conf or
/etc/yum.repos.d/YOURBASEREPO so that

$releasever

is replaced with

3

Then

yum update

If it is your first time with yum (and I recommend switching over to it
from apt), you may need to import the Fedora GPG key

rpm --import http://fedora.redhat.com/about/security/4F2A6FD2.txt

Please paste the whole sad story if there is a spew of errors, unless it
starts to get to a crazy length.
