If I reread it some more, I might eventually get something out of it.

Is compiling 3c59x.c likely to be useful?
If so, how do I go about this?  I've never compiled
a kernel or part thereof before.

An upgrade from RH9 to FC3 handled my ethernet.
I didn't install the RH9, so I don't know how edited it was.
The from-scratch install of FC3 produced the problem.
