bochs vs. vmware

Has anyone had much success with bochs?

The software I paid dearly for, vmware 4.5, is already ending it's
lifespan and, no doubt, will not be long before it doesn't work with
linux anymore.

I tried bochs a few years back and was unable to get it to install an
operating system. At that time, it kept saying I didn't have a cd
inserted and it couldn't install. It was wearisome and after a number
of very late nights, I gave up in utter frustration, despite the
promise the program seemed to show.

Now bochs is up to 2.2 (almost). Would this make a good replacement
for vmware for the home user who uses it maybe once every few weeks,
only to run corel photopaint 9? I would like to install windows xp on
it.
