Sounds not good. Run on FC3

smartctl -t long /dev/hdX

   when it finished

smartctl -a /dev/hdX

to see what S.M.A.R.T. reports.

Thanks, Alexander. I am not able to interpretate the output so maybe you can help med there too? Please see the enclosed file.

______________________________________________________________________
[root@localhost ~]# smartctl -t long /dev/hdX

Self-test execution status: ( 249) Self-test routine in progress...
                                       90% of test remaining.
Total time to complete Offline

Extended self-test routine
recommended polling time: ( 37) minutes.

Let it run. The long self test takes some time. In your case 37 minutes
are estimated. 90% remained when you asked for results. So far I see an
error

40 51 30 58 e2 7a e1 Error: UNC 48 sectors at LBA = 0x017ae258 =
24830552

registered in hour 7952 of your hard drive lifetime. It totally has

9 Power_On_Hours 0x0012 082 082 000 Old_age Always - 7953

So the errors are S.M.A.R.T. registered an hour ago. Does that match
your ext3 FS problem time?

Alexander

Yes, an hour ago is probably correct. The TP had been on but idle the whole day as I was enjoying the very nice weather in Oslo today. It stopped when I tried to use Firefox.

I will start the smartctl over again and post the output in about an hour.
