This would be true if I had installed the Fedora-supplied RPM package for postgresql-server (I believe the latest packages are still in version 7.4.x.) But my work is with version 8.0.1 compiled from a source tarball that was downloaded from postgresql.org.

Why not simply getting the RPM package, extracting only postgresql script from it, and modifying it to match your installation?

I'll be nice enough to attach the script for you ;-)

Thanks Aleksandar! And thanks to all the other folks who responded to this. Chris Ruprecht very kindly contacted me offlist yesterday and was the first to offer me a startup script.

Can someone tell me how to extract just one or two files from an RPM?

Thanks
