Here's a question, why would k3b return an error while trying to run cdrdao as superuser, when I'm not logged in as superuser? This doesn't happen while using kdm.

Yes, you can. I would normally add a proviso along the lines of 
"providing you have the KDE libraries etc. installed" but yum/rpm/apt 
etc. dependency handling should enforce that, so the short answer is "yes".
