Though you don't absolutely have to apply the patches... you probably might want to because that would produce a kernel like what you already have. Those patches are indeed meant to be used.


You can look into the SPEC file to figure out the patch order. Alternatively, just use rpmbuild to construct the binary RPM for you! After installing the binary RPM, make the config changes in the config files (they're all in the SOURCES directory.
