I have the same problem with my dell 8600. I understand the part of editing
the etc/X11/xorg.conf
You mention 2 entries in the "screen" section. So under the subsection with
the "depth" 24 I understand what do you mean by add in the modes line before
the first entry "1920x1200"

Thanks
Mathew

I had the same problem with an Acer Travelmate 4000 (

try this:

edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf

in the "screen" section are 2 entries. I suppose you use 24 bit, so you
move to the subsection with the depth "24" and add in the modes line
before the first entry "1920x1200". After that you have to restart the
xserver ( --> init 3 --> init 5 )

It helped me with an 1280x800 resolution

Best regards

During the setup it asks me for monitor type, so I selected a generic
1920x1200 LCD monitor. When it asks me about screen resolution I can only
select 1920x1440 or 1600x1200, why not 1920x1200. I haven't tried
downloading the drivers from Nvidia yet. Does this make any sense to anyone?
