You certainly build the nvidia module and libs while still running
kernel .2174.

Boot kernel .2179 by entering at grub boot screen "a" and entering "3"
to boot into runlevel 3. Then run the NVidia driver script like
explained on the artoo.net FAQ site: be sure to run step 4) _and_ 5).
