What i IMHO could recommend is, you build your first opinion by yourself,
whether you find linux the right os for you. Best you can do is trying out
with knoppix. it's a bootable cd, which directly starts a linux, and as i
remember the main software should be up on this cd. Also, this leaves your
harddisk as it is at the moment, you work from cdrom...

Afterwards, if the knoppix-introdction gave you a good feeling (i am sure
about...) you have a lot of distributions like Fedora (my personal
favourite), debian, mandrake (free for download) or suse (ftp-installation
or boxed product). There are many many others, those - i think - should be
the most known.

A good info-source would be linux-magazine edition february 2004, where
you got a bit comparison test between the most known distros.
Unfortunately, the have just the intro-online...

btw.: knoppix you get on one cd on http://www.knoppix.org
