Thank you  very much JB.
That explains it.
Since my cpu is a Unicore (amd athlon 3700+), it does not even have 
hyper threading,
and SMP is not enabled in configuration (my choice), so kernel does not 
support cpu topology.
My kernel local build is that of mainline kernel  2.6.38
from kernel.org.
