The problem seemed to be related to the combination of jre, icedtea and
quick java.  Uninstalling JRE and quickjava appears to have returned the
functionality, although there are many errors related to css and html
code which I think can be cleaned up (although this is related but not a
direct portion of this thread.)

Once quickjava and JRE were uninstalled, the firefox appears
functional.  

I have asked in another thread where to refer the html errors.
