You might consider using the applet named "Shut Down" instead. If you
click it, you can select suspend from the dialog that appears, and it
will put the machine in a low power state, one that's easily and
quickly restored from, by pressing a key. On my Thinkpad, suspend
reduces power from 35 to 5 watts and restores in around six seconds.
