Well Ii found the file all right. I did not change profiles. The places.sqlite file does not contain anything that looks like my former bookmarks. Nor will Firefox display what is in the file as bookmarks. So now what? I guess I am a traditionalist and long for the good old days when the bookmarks were in a bookmarks.html file.
