I read of your saga, which seems rather familiar,
though I have no sensible suggestions.

But can't you run the old network system by
	sudo service NetworkManager stop
	sudo service network restart
?

Also, I don't think you mentioned trying "sudo iwlist scan".

I find it rather annoying that this often sees my access point,
yet NM does not seem able to link to it.

The error messages ("reason 43") sent out by NM when it fails
are almost completely useless in my experience.
