Give us an output of:
$ cat /etc/inittab
$ cat .xsession-errors
# cat /etc/grub.conf
# find /etc -iname "*.rpm*"

What desktop manager do you use (GNOME, etc) ?
What GUI display/login manager do you use (GDM, etc) ?
