Thanks, that was a good idea.

I changed to the UK keyboard and the majority of the keys is now what
I expect (it seems the UK keyboard is very similar to the Irish one).
There are a few keys that still do not work, such as those with
accents (áéíóú) plus the euro sign (€), but I can live without them on
the console.

I changed the keyboard using system-config-keyboard, and it reported
that it loaded the UK map from the /lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty
directory, so I was on the right track. There is no keymap for Ireland
in that directory. I went upstream for the relevant package (kbd) and
there is no keymap for Ireland either. This likely means that I would
need to create my own if I want a 100% correct keymap. Some day,
maybe.
