AFAICT, when you highlight text with the mouse/touchpad, you can "copy" it only with the middle button (or both buttons on a two button mouse/touchpad). This is *not* the same as COPY/PASTE, but a similar functionality. You lose the ability to copy the highlighted text as soon as the highlight goes away (presumably by a click somewhere else).
