I'm fairly sure that buggering up those headers means their mail client is not RFC compliant. I seem to recall bad things about Earthlink and Mindspring, as being terrible sources of spam, and causing more spam if you made an official complaint to them about it. So, unfortunately, I'm not surprised by their attitude. Any ISP that deliberately offers broken software, then tells you that that's fine, just screams out "find another service" to me.
