It's only a container, and can contain many different types of audio-video data. You'd really need to find out what sort of AVI file it is, to try and resolve that problem. Having said that, I find that mplayer, with the extra codecs available from is website, can play just about anything. Likewise, VLC can play just about any file I try with it.
