When I got the sound of silence,
mplayer and firefox were using a "sound card"
to which I had not attached speakers.
Are your speakers attached where they should be?
If so, is there some other audio device,
broadly defined, to which audio data might be sent?

Here is advice I got from Tom Horsley:

It works under KDE.
