Next step check pulseaudio:

$ ps -ef | grep pulse
jd   2154     1  0 Oct03 ? 00:06:59 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start 
--log-target=syslog
jd   2159  2154  0 Oct03 ? 00:00:00 /usr/libexec/pulse/gconf-helper

Also, in  Sound Preferences -> Output, did you select Analog Output / 
Amplifier?
Also, when you run GSTmixer (gst-mixer-2.26.0-3.fc11.i586  mine has 
remained since F11 and  no updates available since then),
does anything show as being muted?
