Is it possible that machine is his internet gateway/firewall ??

If so, this may (or not) be reachable via its internal private lan -
but when trying from the 'outside' has problems.

If the outside attempt is really - client->gateway->gateway - then the
firewall may need another rule .. this is distinct from when you're
coming in from a machine that is really outside (say trying from a
friends house or work or whatever).
