Full disk encryption can prevent access if they power your machine down without taking measures to copy what is in memory (to retrieve the disk keys). A dead man system can deal with leaving it powered up for too long. If you are running a gambling operation or the like and can afford to have a trusted person available at all times to react to a raid, you can arrange for memory to be cleared in a very short period of time.
