On my laptop,
I have external drives connected via esata to my pcmcia
esata adapter. I can unmount the drives and unplug them
and re-plug them and re-mount them while system is up.
Ditto with USB drives.
The sata ports on a motherboard are no different.
I am not so sure about PATA though. I thought those have
to be detected at boot only. Hot swapping PATA (IDE) drives
could lock up or crash your system.
