Found the issue.  Somehow the update process had changed my default SMTP server's authentication method from something other than "normal password" (STARTTLS).

Set it back, and all is right with the world again.

Odd that sendmail should generate such a bogus error message... in /var/log/messages... which a random value for the errno (or whatever) no less.
