I read your message too late. Here's what I did to solve the problem: I opened firefox in safe mode, and disabled all add-ons (video downloadhelper, foxweather, adblock, tubestop, trackmenot). I also disabled all plugins. And that fixed the problem. Next, I proceeded to enable all the plugins that I needed (adobe reader, the gecko media player for all media types, ..etc) Next I re-installed the add-ons mentioned above. and re-started firefox in normal mode. All is well now.
