Sun's JRE will install over the top of an existing JRE install. However, if it breaks, you get to keep the results. I also have a lot of fun installing the JDK on Sun systems and RHEL/RHAS systems. Windows is another animal where the installer wants to make sure it has a clean platform (this means removing msjava as well) to install on so it rips everything out and then installs again.
