Just a thought, but the first thing I do when
trying to solve an X problem is reboot the machine in runlevel 3 (and
tell /etc/inittab to use 3 as the default). Then, you can modify your X settings (making a copy of xorg.conf beforehand, natch), and start X with the startx command; then it'll either come up or it'll fail and maybe leave you with a useful error message.
