Also, I think you need to restart X as well, not just remove the xorg.conf. If 
GDM/KDM is still running on the F7 console, it still uses the old xorg.conf. 
Do a ctrl-alt-backspace on it, or if that doesn't work (GDM case), just reboot 
the whole machine.
