I agree with your assessment of why many people don't use it. It's also the case that some webmail systems (e.g. Gmail) don't even support it -- in fact they seem to have few features for mailing list support. However I was mainly wondering why no-one on this particular thread (which is after all about mailing lists) has mentioned it either.
