My question was could I go in and unzip individual files. It seems that can't be done easily. So I can unzip the whole thing and take what I need from the resulting files. I have sufficient storage space for that. I put the tar file on the NFS server where I can get to it as long as NFS works on a new install. If not I have another computer I can move files to and shift them around. I don't think I can "paint myself into a corner?" I usually do though!
