That's not quite true. Most of the proprietary "BIOS RAID" (aka ata-RAID, fake RAID etc.) formats have been supported for quite a long time now by the dmraid project: http://people.redhat.com/heinzm/sw/dmraid/ Some of the formats (as is the case with Intel ISW on F13) are now using MD RAID but it's been quite a while since you had to use non-standard proprietary drivers or kernel modules to use these things.
