Control-A does work for me but it is (and to my recollection always was) context sensitive. If you click on a message and then press control-A, it selects all messages but if you are reading a specific message and then press Control-A, it selects the contents of that message. It does change the status from unread to read after 1.5 seconds (per my preferences).
