The slowness (and stalls) is most likely due to the servers being overloaded by tens of thousands of users like you trying to preupgrade and upgrading on line. Be patient. Start your preupgrade before you go to bed, and when you get up in the morning it should be finished. Or just wait a month until the rush is over.
