If you need 720x480 rather than the original size, specify that, and set the bitrate to 3Mbit for decent quality. ffmpeg -i your.mkv -s 720x480 -b 3M foo.avi I have had no problems with flash, to avi or DVD format, don't know what issues (other than bitrate, avi is default too low).
